Art by Gary Houston

Gary Houston’s work honors tradition. His studio is situated in a Portland, Oregon industrial loft, where he finds a comfortable rhythm in the process of screen printing.

“Silk screen printing is a dance, a process done step by step, pass by pass. Screen printing is a lot of hard, physical labor. And figuring out the optimum mechanical process seems like a lifelong adventure to all of us involved in the craft.”

“Screen printing is still the essence of human printmaking. The secret is in the human imagination that thinks up the shapes and the sequencing of the stencils. You put something of yourself in every print. You try to imbue each print with stimulating organic qualities.”

“My goal is that my printed pieces express an emotional quality, a feeling of spontaneity, immediacy in the way they came to life. It’s about keeping the spirit of hands on production alive, and giving a voice to less than mainstream musical groups.”
